YERCAUD HENRIETTA MEMORIAL TREK 1857

Early 1800’ s Europeans in India set foot on our verdant hills in order to escape the unbelievable hot weather of the plains. Each of the pioneers traced their own routes. Even though the Shevaroyan hills had seen some undated , unidentified adventurous Europeans as early as 1805, the first recorded climber was M.D. Cockburn, the then collector of Salem, who started some establishments in the lands that is now known as“GRANGE” At his behest, in 1941, Rev. Lechler and Mr. H. Brett MCS, the then Asst Collector climbed hills from ‘Bommidi ghat via the Akrur and Poomarathur villages. This opened the civilian adventure to this great Hill station today known as“YERCAUD” Many developments started.Yercaud started drawing Europeans from far & wide. Retired officers, clergy,, planters,military men etc. The invaders carried England with them where ever they went and settled here with the domestic support of the local malayalees.

Way back in 1857, a thirteen year old, English girl by name Charlotte chose to climb Yercaud and took the climb ..She deliverged her twin daughters on the 6th of August.One of the twin was named “ Henrietta” and grew up to be “Henrietta Charlotte Rosario”. Incidentally, she is the pioneer owner of“ The Eastlynne Farm Estate” .She is said to have created this coffe grove and built the villa.Henrietta Charlotte Rosario was born, on the sixth of August 1857 in Yercaud, and was buried here in Yercaud on 16.09.1940 by Rev. Prince. Her tomb ( No. 230 ) at Yercaud stands witness to her vision and life, her strong likes and dislikes. Her 83 years is a message and is history by itself.

To mark the memory of the birth of Henrietta Charlotte INDeco (http://www.indecohotels.com/) is inviting discerning trekkers to relive history. Let’s redo the day via the ‘BRIDAL PATH’ the path that Henrietta’s mom took to climb yercaud long ,long ago. Way back in 1857.

TENTATIVE PROGRAMME

4th August Wednesday 2010
Over 200 trekkers meet at The lake Forest Hotel on the banks of Yercaud, Erstwhile home of Henrietta Charlotte Rosario.

5th August Thursday 2010
6 a.m. Trekkers leave Yercaud for ‘BRIDAL PATH’ BASE CAMP by vehicle. And start the climb on foot. To reach Yercaud’s by Sunset via the Tiperary Estate .

6th August Friday 2010
Celebrate Henrietta’s Birthday at the LAKE FOREST HOTEL and return home.
